Those of you who caught Capricorns in 2007 at All Tomorrow's Parties or on their European tour last summer witnessed a very different animal. They were still the vicious juggernaut they have always been but this time around the tempo's were a hell of a lot faster, the arrangements more technically adept and the progrock (it's not a dirty word anymore folks!) tendencies only hinted at previously had come boldly to the fore.

Aided by the frenetic urgency of new drummer Nathan Perrier (ex Conflict) "River, Bear Your Bones', their hotly anticipated third release for Rise Above is a Frankensteinian sum of parts that slaps together the last 40 years of rock and it's outer limits whilst simultaneously managing to avoid the tired clichés (well, the shittiest ones anyway) of the 'heavy' genre. River, Bear Your Bones is their tribute to life on the stones, a paean to Father Thames and the London Towne that spreads from its banks like a concrete cancer. From the battle-doom opener 'Broken Coffin Of The Venerable King', the evil filth-prog of 'The Bells Rang Backwards' through to the albums monumental conclusion, a warts-and-all 11 minute rehearsal room jam recorded straight to cassette entitled 'Drinking Water From The Skull Of A Hanged Man' this album grabs you by the throat and holds you there for the duration.

While previous efforts have seen the occasional vocal outburst, notably from Oxbow's Eugene Robinson on 2006's Ruder Forms Survive, this time around Capricorns decided the arrangements were strong enough to hold their own. As before, the quartet is augmented by the addition of keyboards, most of them of the '70s analogue variety but this time around they get right up in your face and the experience is so unashamedly Euro it's like being hit in the face with a wet thong in a German sauna. And that's a good thing.

Thanks for listening.
